Smarty Preschool Adventure Review and Giveaway - 2/18

We homeschool our kids so I'm always on the lookout for new products to add to their education.  With our 4 year old, I'm pretty relaxed about teaching her, but she's so anxious to learn that I've been started teaching her some.  So when I got the chance to review the Smarty Preschool Adventure iPad app, I knew it would be a perfect fit for what we needed!  And it's been great!
The app is bright and colorful, and has a cute little cat...which was a huge hit for the girl who claims to be Supercat ;)  There are several games to play that teach colors, shapes, sorting and more.

My favorite thing about the app is the game that helps prepare kids for handwriting,  Since I have a little girl who is anxious to learn how to write like her big brother, this has been a great way for her to practice the fine motor skills required for handwriting.  Using your finger, you connect the flowers and reveal the shape.  I think though that I might have start using a pen-like stylus so that she can be practicing how to hold a pencil as well.

Of course her favorite thing is the balloons that fill the screen when you complete a game.  She loves getting to pop them all!

We did have a couple of small bumps in the road though.  The first is that they use the name "violet" where we would normally say "purple".  No biggie, I just had to clarify that they're the same color and she was good.  The second is that there is a physics style game where there are shapes on the ground that you have to drag up to the cloud,

The diamond sometimes falls on it's side and looks like a square.  Again, it was as simple as showing her that once you "pick it up" it's a triangle again.  And actually, it is a great way of teaching some simple physics, and showing how the different shapes behave when moved.  Gotta take advantage of all those teaching opportunities, right?

Overall this app has been a great addition to our school day!  We've been enjoying this app (even big brother likes to "help" her play!) and would definitely recommend it for helping your preschooler learn and get ready for kindergarten.

  1. iPad's can be wonderful learning tools when managed properly by the parents. However, when they are not managed properly by the parents, they become just a game as opposed to a learning tool. It's no different than any other type of media...like the television, computer, computer game, etc. These can all be very beneficial for both the parents and the children as long as they are MANAGED by the parents. If the parents don't care, that's when the problems begin. And, the one thing the computer does take away is the handwriting skills. Even their printing skills begin to decline the more they use the computer. But, my sister just told me that cursive is actually being brought back into the curriculum in the public schools!

    1. Good point! It is very important to manage our children's exposure to media and to make sure it's helping them rather than hindering them. That's good to hear about cursive! I think it's still being taught in the public schools in my area, but they've talked in the past about taking it out of the curriculum.
